The San Mateo Coast from Pacifica to Davenport is a stunning, 40 mile stretch along Highway 1. Also known as the ‘Slow Coast’ it is a great place to unwind. Bright green grass and an explosion of wild flowers await you.
Start at Linda Mar Beach in Pacifica, and head south along Highway 1. Once a steep ride along an unstable hillside, the route now heads through a tunnel. However, you can still walk along the old road grade and stare down at the ocean from the precipitous slopes of Devil’s Slide. Montara State Beach lies at the south end, a sweeping stretch of granite sand and crashing waves.
Head south to the town of Half Moon Bay, which features lovely hotel accommodations along the water, and excellent dining opportunities with fresh seafood at Princeton Harbor. You can stay at an inn, or at a local campground. During the winter, Half Moon Bay State Beach attracts an international surfing crowd who come to tackle giant waves up to 60 feet tall, among the largest in the world.
Don’t miss the landmark Cameron’s Pub and Restaurant in Half Moon Bay, a British public house built over 100 years ago. You can choose from over 80 kinds of beer while you enjoy fish and chips in this authentic setting. You’ll feel like you’re right in the heart of London.
The nearby village of Pescadero offers locally-grown, authentic home-cooked food at Duarte’s, an iconic Portuguese tavern dating back to 1894. Just down the street, Arcangeli’s Country Bakery offers delicious baked goods and locally-made delicacies. Idyllic farms surround the town, with rich produce growing in picturesque fields. Head east up the valley just a few miles and arrive at San Mateo County Memorial Park where you can stroll through heritage redwood groves, wade in the creek, clamber through a huge hollowed-out log, and enjoy a picnic under the trees. This park is such a treasure!

Big logs cover the beaches and make fantastic looking driftwood shelters at San Gregorio State Beach. A giant sea cave beckons you to look for lost treasure. The rugged sandstone cliffs at nearby Pomponio, Pescadero, and Bean Hollow State Beaches are impressive. At low water, local tide pools showcase marine life in brilliant colors. Little snowy plover birds skitter along the shore while seals play in the waves, daring you to jump in and challenge the raging surf.

The 115 foot tall Pidgeon Point lighthouse is a California Historic Landmark. Built in 1871, this beacon has shone for 144 years. You can rent a lighthouse-keeper’s house for an overnight stay. Yellow lupine blankets the region in a spectacular display of gold.

Further to the south is Ano Nuevo State Beach where you can watch elephant seals gather each winter. A visitor center, situated in a large historic barn, showcases displays about the natural and cultural history of the area. You can meet with park staff here to schedule a guided tour.
Whether you stroll along a windswept beach, hike through a redwood forest, dine in a local restaurant, or just cruise down the highway enjoying the amazing views, you will revel in the relaxing beauty of the San Mateo Coast.
